Quebec Serrada Kali Sumbrada CentreHead Moves or The Central Learning Point
Basic Single Person Static Drills
The Basic Single Person CentreHead Drills comprise of the basic four initial block and counter, single person routines of this style. Using the ‘Central Learning Point’, the CentreHead combined moves of defence and counter strikes.
Two CentreHead or horizontal head (roof) blocks, with the points of the stick facing to either the right or left, are combined with two simple counters, the backhand and forehand CentreHead strikes, which are the eleven (11) and twelve (12) strikes from the Twelve Basic Strikes. The 11 and 12 are delivered from both shoulders but they aim for the one target point, the centre of the head or the centre of mass. These moves when combined to a Drill, are called the ‘CentreHead Blocks and Strikes’ in Quebec Serrada Kali and each Drill is a four move routine. The head, upper, wing or roof blocks of other schools are similar to these two CentreHead Blocks.
The Single Person Drills are at first taught with static footwork, used against an imaginary opponent.
As in all learning, relax when first practising your attack and defence moves, as this will lead to being relaxed as much as possible when being attacked. Training it confident and relaxed, can lead to fighting it confident and relaxed.
Simple Tips
Both of these simple tips are written for the Basic Static Footworked Single Stick exercises but the principles apply for all motions, of all CentreHead moves with any weapon/s.
Right Hander – Right Foot Forward
For a right hander executing these exercises with the right foot forward stance; The CentreHead Block’s weapon is forcefully projected out forward, targeting at the centre of the face height of the imaginary opponent, stick in a horizontal position. The weapon does not move as an upward block up away from in between the trainer and the imaginary opponent. The weapon during the emptyhand clear/control, does not swing back behind the head, like some schools umbrella blocks but the weapon moves straight back to either shoulder, covering and chambered to counter/strike.
Right Hander – Left Foot Forward
For a right hander executing these exercises with the left foot forward stance; After the left hand palm flow manoeuvre, the CentreHead Block’s weapon is forcefully projected out forward, targeting at the centre of the face height of the imaginary opponent, stick in a horizontal position. The weapon does not move as an upward block away from in between the trainer and the imaginary opponent, like a De–Pluma block of some schools. The weapon during the emptyhand clear/control, moves straight back to either shoulder, covering and chambered to counter/strike.
Right Foot Forward Forehand Counter.
