There are several types of Sumbrada Drills being taught today in different schools of K/A/E. Some have the specific set number of Six moves to a Drill, whilst some schools also have a Ten move Drill system of five strikes and five blocks. Quebec Serrada Kali concentrates on the Six move system, as our style is trained in conjunction with our footwork of Natural Stepping or Natural Footwork. This includes the Three Basic Stepping Routines from the CentreHead Drills. This grows into combined Aggressive/Defensive footwork, with the newer blocks and strikes Stepping Patterns, within the counter to counter Sumbrada and the Blocking and Striking Rules of Angle, with the Hands and Feet motions combined. Simply, the Ten move system does not work well with our footwork and uses blocks Quebec finds inappropriate. We find the strikes and blocks from the Ten system are covered and even more, when one knows the Sub-Sets within the formulae of our Six Step Sumbrada.
The First Formula
1: The Head – Shoulder – Ribs (HSR)
The blocks and strikes of the six move Sumbradas complement each other. That is, when one strikes the other blocks. The subsequent counter strike is in turn blocked, then turned into a counter strike. When the Sumbrada has reached three moves it returns upon itself and each does the opposite moves in the routine or Drill.
Head 1) You strike head, I block. Shoulder 2) I strike shoulder, You block. Ribs 3) You strike rib, I block.
Now the roles are reversed and complemented.
Head 4) I strike head, You block. Shoulder 5) You strike shoulder. I block. Ribs 6) I strike rib, You block.
Now it is back to the beginning.
Head 1) You strike head, I block.
Each of the six move Sumbradas formulae for this book taught by the CQC and all of the formula in the Style as a whole, are now shown that they can be divided into four sub-drills. The Head-Shoulder-Ribs Formula above, falls into the Bipedal/Bilateral Motion Principle of K/A/E. It simply depends on the side the CentreHead counter attack/strike comes from, after the initial CentreHead block. As mentioned earlier, the drills are usually of six moves in duration with three attacks and three complementary blocks, but each have four Sub-Drills or Sub-Sets which can make up 24 moves to a Formula.
