Lower Wing Blocks
If the fighter lowers their stance (by bending the knees) in the Roof block–parry, the now ‘Lower Wing’ blocks can also protect most of the upper body, especially the sides of the head and shoulders of the fighter, usually to stop the force of a slash strike from within the styles Twelve basic Strikes. The emptyhand is usually contacting and then pushing/sideclearing the opponents weapon down, to open or clear for a return counter attack. The wing and roof blocks, at whatever height, were explained by Floro Quebec, as to imitate and protect like the leaves of the coconut palm tree.
The lower wing blocks in Quebec Serrada Kali are different to the wing blocks of Balintawak. The wing blocks of Balintawak that are taught in Group One, are trained with a grapple between the two fighters emptyhands.
