Quebec Serrada Kali – The Twelve Basic Strikes

The Attack Angles

There are Twelve Basic Strikes using the single stick in Quebec Serrada Kali. Why Twelve? The number of twelve strikes are common in most styles prevalent today in Kali/Arnis/Escrima (K/A/E). Most other styles however, will often direct their twelve strikes towards different target points on the opponent, depending on the thinking of the formulator of the style.

The number Twelve seems to have a pre–European mystical or what some may say, superstitious meaning, with a type of numerical fortune telling symbolism, or omenistic value, attached to it. With the coming of Western colonizers and Catholicism, a Christian religious meaning, is attached as a good sign to many Filipino’s, as it resembles the number of apostles that Jesus Christ had.

With the teaching of the kali sticks, the Basic Footwork is taught also. The Twelve Strikes shown in the photographs are using the left foot to move. The right foot also can be used moving to perform the strikes, but are not shown.

The Rule of Angle Basic Kali Striking Footwork

For either a left or right handed person, if the strike comes from the left side of the body, the left foot is forward. If the strike comes from the right side of the body, the right foot is forward. It does not matter if the strike is a slash, thrust or butt.

This footwork gives the student the knowledge which is needed to manoeuvre and properly position their body for a more stronger faster strike.

In the two person resource exercise, the figure in the left of the photographs will be called A, while the figure in the right of the photographs shall be called B.
