The Fists a First Or Last Resort? Part Two.

When I first started learning Asian Martial Arts with their kicking, I was advised by my boxing friends that only a coward or a girl would learn to kick to defend themself. When I branched out to Filipino Martial Arts weapons from my barehanded and kicking Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do and Hap Ki Do I was given the sagely advice from a Hap Ki Do instructor, “A person only needs their hands and feet to protect themself. Anything else is unmanly.” (Funny that Hap Ki Do teaches weapons later as well).

Is barehanded fighting a normal first resort to be taught in this modern world? Or is it an only resort that has been imposed by Governments?

Most barehanded eastern asian martial Arts come from Korea, China, Japan and Okinawa, areas where the Japanese invaders imposed weapons bans on their newly conquered populations.

The Japanese government even imposed bans on their own citizens when the country was unified several hundred years earlier, when the Shogun took power and banned farmers and peasants from owning weapons.

Most governments around the world today, impose weapons carrying bans on its citizens. I recommend to students not to carry what one would call a specially designed weapon, such as a knife, unless they have a valid reason to carry a sharp cutting object, such as for cutting fruit or for use in their work.

End of Part 2….
