Straight Stick Blocks/Vertical Blocks
The ‘Straight Stick’/‘Vertical’ blocks are to the left or the right. They are directed or punched out forcefully from the shoulders, at a forty five degree angle, to the sides of the body centre line, at the front of the fighter. The block can also sweep across the front of the body, to both sides for protection. The stick point is on the majority, in the ninety degree vertical or straight up position.
With a right handed person, the vertical block to the right, can have the emptyhand to the front of the weapon, while the vertical stick block to the left, can have the emptyhand to the back of the stick or in the ‘Cross Over’ position of the emptyhand crossing over the arm to the front of the stick hand.
After the initial contact of weapon to weapon, the blocker’s emptyhand can either be, breaking/checking or flowing through whatever weapon hand, the stick is blocking.
